Historically ground mustard

Traditional enjoyment - for 200 years

The historic mustard mill Birgel in the Eifel is a destination for children and families, but is also suitable for inclusion in company outings and company parties.

A view from the hotel room is a journey into the past

The old mill – commonly known as a grain mill – is the oldest of the four functioning mills on the mill site in Birgel/Eifel. It dates back to the 13th century and was first taken into private ownership by Peter Reifferscheid in 1917. The watermill was then equipped with a turbine, making it the largest mill in the Daun/Vulkaneifel district. A sawmill was also added to the old mill in 1917.

The power of the turbine (20.9 kW / 28 HP) was sufficient to drive both mills using water power.

Mills & Restaurants

After the restoration of the mill site in 1995, head miller Erwin also added a mustard mill and an oil mill to his premises in response to the great interest shown by visitors. There are now also four restaurants on the mill site, where regional delicacies are served. You can find an overview here.

Another highlight of our historic watermill is the flour mill. It extends over three floors. Marvel at the process of flour production from start to finish.

This oil press has been producing freshly pressed oil for over 130 years. It has a capacity of 300 liters per day for the production of rapeseed oil .

Mechanical lathe

Our lathe, powered by a steam engine, is suitable for milling, drilling and metalworking.

Grinding wheel

Alongside the oil press and the steam engine, the painting wheel is another historical tool that can be admired in full operation.

Schöpfbrauerei

In our Schöpfbrauerei you will learn how the monks brewed beer over 150 years ago. Today we produce our delicious mill beer here.

Diesel generators & engines

Many of our attractions are powered by old generators and motors and give an impression of how manual labor has been replaced by machines.
